There are two states listed in box 16:

Total in box 1 70995.22

States in Box 16

VA 70995.22

MD 16572.94

So it appears that VA taxed the complete salary. So when I do the file the 502 (part year) for the State of MD reflecting salary when I lived in the other state, should I file the difference between VA and MD or should I submit the 70995.22 as it appears in the W2 for VA even if the total would be more than total in box 1?

In most cases, the total of the state incomes in box 16 will equal the amount of box 1 but not always.

Your payroll provider believes that one or the other state has a claim on a portion of all of your taxable income,

One state may consider a payment taxable income differently from the Federal taxable income, or

There could be an error.

Do you have your final pay stub of the year to compare back to the W-2? Contact your employer or payroll provider if you have a question.

If I am filling part year for two states. One state taxed me the complete salary, while the other just part of it. Should both state amount be total of the box 1?

Total salary for one state = 79000

Total salary for second state = 16572

Should the income of one state be 16572 and the second state should be 62428?

Enter the W-2 exactly as it appears. If you make changes based on what you think it should be, you may end up with a document mismatch and your return could be rejected or put under reviewing. The taxing authority in each state will have received a copy of the W-2 from the employer. Be sure that you indicated in the My Info section exactly when you moved to the other state. You will also want to complete part-year resident returns for both states.

From there, be sure to review your state returns and see how it is allocating the income. You can preview your return prior to paying for the software, but you may not get the schedule that allocates income based on residency.

From the menu on the left, choose Tax Tools

Click on Tools

Click on View Tax Summary

Again from the left, you can choose to preview your state return

does box 16 reflect all the wages for just 1 state or are there two states listed in the state section with the wages split between them?

if just one state is listed with all the wages, you could have a problem since that state could conclude all the wages were earned while a resident of that state. it would not allow proration. you would need a corected w-2 from your employer splitting the wages between the two states.
