What? If you purchased desktop (CD/download) Premier you only need one copy and you can prepare and e-file up to five federal returns--more returns than that are allowed to be printed and mailed in fact.

All you need to do to prepare a second tax return is open the program back up and click New Return.

Where did you buy the software? Maybe you can return the 2nd one if you did not open it.

(And....you cannot install a second copy of that same software on the same computer anyway. )

bought two copies of Premier.

one for me, one for the parents.

installed first copy on my laptop and filed my return.

whats the proper procedure for the second filing ?

download and install another copy using the new license code, or start a new return in the existing Premier ?

The Desktop program can do unlimited returns and efile 5 Federal for free. It is 24.99 to efile a state return (19.99 before March 1 and NY is free). Or you can print and mail state for free.

To start a new return go up to FILE - New. But first be sure to save your return with a unique name so it doesn’t get confused with another return. Go to File-Save or Save As. Because if you do another return and they have the same first name or initial as you their return might save over yours.

And be in the habit of saving Frequently! When you are done save both the .tax data file and save it as a pdf file, go to File-Save to PDF. Then you won’t need the program installed to view or print your return in the future. Like if you need a copy to get a loan or something. And save backups off of your computer like to a flash drive or burn a CD.
