My son received only a $5.50 scholarship from IU for good grades. We can claim him as a dependent, does he have to file his own return to claim or just omit the 5.50?

You can claim him as a dependent. You do not add this small amount to your return.

If your son has no other income, he does not have to file his own return as the amount is well below the filing requirement limits.
