I started my return filing jointly, but have decided to change to separately. I'm the wife, and i own a sole proprietorship. For some reason, under my Asset Entry worksheet, my husband is the name shown on return. I've already told TT that i own the business alone. Is it because he is listed on the return first?

On a MFJ return, the name listed first is listed across the top of all subsequent forms. If you have switched to MFS, his name should not be showing up on your forms.

MFJ is much more beneficial than MFS in most cases. Please check out this video on MFJ vs MFS.

Did you file Joint for 2018? You should start your own new MFS return and not transfer from 2018. Start over, go to File-New Tax Return. Be sure to rename each return so a second return doesn't overwrite the first one which can happen if 2 people have the same first initial. Go to File-Save As

Many people think they come out better when filing Married Filing Separate but they are probably doing it wrong. If one person itemizes deductions then the other one must itemize too, even if it's less than the standard deduction, even if it is ZERO!

And there are several credits you can't take when filing separately, like the

EITC Earned Income Tax Credit

Child Care Credit

Educational Deductions and Credits

And contributions to IRA and ROTH IRA are limited when you file MFS.

Also if you file Married Filing Separately up to 85`% of your Social Security becomes taxable right away even with zero other income.

See …….
