I bet you a PM brought up that they got some emails from users who were confused about the release notes, creating more load on support, so they decided to remove release notes. But instead of at least doing that well and removing the link, they forgot to remove the link. And now, to put the icing on the cake, they claim it's a feature instead of a bug.

It's been an ongoing trend with all Intuit programs that testing is virtually absent. Every release features tons of bugs and flaws in functionality that don't get resolved for months or ever. At this point Mint (also owned by Intuit) displays different balances and transactions between the app and web UIs, and customer service doesn't even respond anymore (you get what you pay for, i.e. just ads for Mint). Back to TurboTax, I've tried the "Live" service in the past and about half of the "Enrolled Agents" were unwilling or unable to to even try to answer my question after I told them I prefer NOT to share my information with them. Smells like a scam or at least a lack of appropriate screening to me...it's one thing for Amazon to use untrained workers to deliver packages (also causing lots of problems), but this is another level.

All in all I'm at the point where I cannot trust any Intuit product anymore. If they get easy things like links wrong, who knows what they do with the important stuff.
Until you file expect the program to change, once you have filed if there are changes that affect your return the program will send you an email alert instead of you having to check the program from time to time... this feature is better than release notes most people cannot understand and most that do not affect the masses. This is why they confirm your email when you file ... make sure you pay attention to what TT sends you and that they don't go to spam.

You should always save a PDF of the return (with & without the worksheets) after you file a return so you can always review the new return against what was filed to see if there was any change after the updates. Also you should shut off the auto updating function once you file so you are not surprised later.

This is a terrible reply to TurboTax users. You state that the users cannot understand the release notes, which is just a corp. excuse to hide the corrections to the program. Having used TurboTax for over 25 years both personal and corp programs there has yet been a release note that was difficult for the user to understand.

Just where are this year's release notes? The article number is part of the link (that has been discontinued since when). The release note is dated 1/13/2020. today is 1/15/2020. Am I to understand that a release note has disappeared in less than 2 days' time because the link points to nothing now? This suggests that release notes have been discontinued for THIS YEAR. And why is this anyway? Just where will we find the reasons for updates and specifically what tax issues and forms are affected? In the early day of working up a return we could think we are done and current and not know that some changes have affected the return, we have waiting to submit or did submit. I am not impressed with what is happening here. Yax software is too important to not be informative. What is TT SUPPORT for anyway?

This is pure BS. Hiding what has changed is not the way to better support your customers. I actually care about release notes and read them. Contrary to what someone else said, the notes are not something new from last Feb. Every year I look through the notes as updates are released so I know what to look for on my returns to verify the accuracy. By taking this away, Intuit is taking on the responsibility of accuracy.

I would also like to point out that this makes it so Intuit gets to send out a mass email to all their customers when they screw something up now, which means more of a chance for a class action lawsuit over their old method of hiding issues in release notes. I guess that's one benefit... not one that benefits Intuit at all, but hey, it won't matter once they go to court.

I will no longer be a customer next year as there are a variety of other options out there that actually communicate changes and issues. I am also going to advise my employer to stop offering incentives for TurboTax as it places them in a worse position with less clarity. Good thing they are only the largest employer in Arizona.

Between this change, the clusterF that is the 2019 licensing and codes not working/requiring reentry/using multiple instances of the 5 permitted uses of the license key (really? wth), I'm ready to uninstall, return to Amazon, and switch to a different product. I've been with TT for many, many years, but this has hit ridiculous new heights.

Agreed that this is ridiculous.

I used to feel better about having audit protection, but having experienced all this I bet that's a scam, too. They're clearly steering from a professional product towards the cheapest shiniest thing that can skim off as much money as possible from those who don't know better.

But if I click the link for resolution, it directs me to an empty Intuit page. I also tried to open a new return. TT just spins and eventually crashes.

I tried deleting my installation of TT (I ultimately had to force-ably remove it) - and downloaded a fresh copy from the download site. After the install - and update - same problem.

This is nonsense . C'mon folks, get your act together....

TT no longer has that page which informs you about form changes. everyone that clicks on the link has the same problem. that link hasn't worked for about a year. TT MODS say it supposed to be fixed in the future. I and everyone else will believe it if we ever see it. after the fix (?) what they say will happen is that if you submit a return TT will notify you if a form in your return is updated. This, of course, means that TT is snooping. How else could they know what forms are in your return!

as to your other problem, have you tried rebooting. if so, do you get any error codes - you may have to contact TT support. your other option is an uninstall, reboot and reinstall and then go through the updates again. then reboot.

I have the same version running on win7 and have not had a problem with updates. However, some do require a reboot.

It is like my accountant tells me that they had to make some changes to my return but they cannot tell what and why. Get real Turbotax

Me either, I can't get the state download to work at all. It says it's updated, but does nothing but try to download again. I even remove TT, rebooted (because it's Windows, always reboot for everything), then reinstalled from CD again. Same, state download does nothing. If you skip to the review step it even says you didn't even do a state return, so it knows the state product isn't there. I've used TT for years and I'm furious right now.

I agree with cliffmason and others and want a return to the traditional update info when you load TurboTax! It matters to me because: (1) I don't get e-mail updates from TurboTax; (2) most years I begin the process early to get a feel for what family members might owe, or receive as refunds, before the IRS and states have fully updated their forms; and (3) when you load TurboTax, you want to know what is new, and the program still tells you that something is new--it just won't tell you what.

This is ridiculous!.

I will reserve judgment for now. However, I hope Intuit sends the emails from a DIFFERENT email than the sales pitches, because I shuttle those off to a seldom used email account that I periodically check.. I of course want to read the proposed emails. Can Intuit at least tell us what the email address or name or subject will include so I can find these? More general comment: Having used both TurboTax and Quicken for many years, the various corporate mergers and splits have not been very customer-friendly. The products are generally very good, and I am well-versed by now in how to use them; but major changes seem to be made with no customer input. How do they alpha and beta test? Do they do get user input before they start, to guide the process? Do marketing and engineering talk to each other? This is not a product complaint, I will continue to use the product, but I am unlikely to buy Intuit stock on some consumer doubt. (Quicken going subscription is off-topic here, but I do complain about that. It was better under Intuit.)

Good point about quality assurance fail. As I previously commented, this also is a customer relations fail. I had to 1) sign up for community and 2) hunt for this thread in order to ascertain what the dead link would tell me about the change. And I'd like to hear about the ISO 9000 requirement, it would be a shame if that recognition were not behind the product.

NOT INFORMING CUSTOMERS OF THE SOFTWARE CHANGES INCLUDED IN UPDATES after the reviews are published! Appears to be part of a BAIT and SWITCH philosophy at INTUIT.

Every year, I read the reviews of tax software to determine which one is the best. This year TurboTax was reported to have "Comprehensive Support" so I bought the Premier DVD (I want control of my data). The software has the link to display the details of the updates but the web page that should contain the details does not exist. No Apology. No Explanation.

I WONDER WHAT ELSE INTUIT IS SECRETLY ELIMINATING?

I agree. I am waiting for depreciation to be fixed (waiting 2 years). Much simpler to just read the notes they would have when they did updates then to be in the dark and have to "REVIEW" your return to see if needed forms are there now or if the program has been fixed. I have been using Turbo since 2008 and the last 2 years have been the worst so far; taking until almost the end of January to have "forms ready" or added or program be fixed. BTW, Depreciation still isn't fixed. On Jan 1st each year I am ready to enter my information so that I can know whether I need to increase my 1/15 Estimated Tax payment or not. Last year and this year, Turbo missed that mark by a mile. Really??? Nothing changed on Form 4562 or Sch A but the date at the top of the form. How long does it take to change a date? In the meantime, because they don't have the "form" ready it won't even compute the amounts. Also, last year, because Turbo won't/didn't correct the depreciation calculation (s), I was forced to file with H & R Block. I am hoping they get it fixed this year, so that I can stay with Turbo Tax.

It is 3 weeks later. TurboTax is still updating and the more details link is still showing up on the Updater screen. Don't the programmers know how to remove the details link?? The nonemployees of TurboTax have been stating that the link will be removed for months. (Actually, depending on what program one is using, it has been years in some cases)

Crappy Customer Service is the reason behind Offshoring our programmers. When your programmers are in Bangladesh, Mauritania or China, you can't expect them to program your Tax application and document the software changes.... and least not in English. Don't forget that we pay for what we get... cheap software prices beget cheap software (executed by cheap foreign labor). You want readable update documentation? Be prepared to pay more for your software.

It is vehicle depreciation that is wrong if a Turbo Customer doesn't know what the figure should be each year, then they are filing a incorrect tax return. ie: Last year 2nd year deprec. on a my work van should have been $5,700. Turbo Tax gave me $4,719?? So, I thought I would check my figure on H & R Block and Tax Act software, I was correct $5,700. Turbo wouldn't fix their program by 4/15 so I had to go ahead and file with H & R. Again, this year is 3rd year deprec. and should be $3,444 and Turbo is giving me $2,832?? and both years the Part V of the Form 4562 is incorrectly stated as well as the wrong amount. Last year, 24 "Tax Advisors" with remote sessions, all agreeing the amount and form is wrong and "put in" a ticket with the CSI Team (coding/IT department), still no fix.

At the very least, the web links should point to a page (404 page) that describes the new policy. It is very disconcerting to use a product and have the very first interaction be what is clearly a bug (a help system that does not work). It makes me very nervous about the quality of the underlying product.
