Did you previously give the non-custodial parent an "open ended" 8332 for future years (part II of the form)?

If so, then you need to fill out part III to revoke part II starting *next* year - it will not take place this year. Note that the 8332 form Part II states:

quote

"Write the specific future year(s) or “all future years” in the space provided in Part III.
The revocation will be effective no earlier than the tax year following the year you provide the noncustodial parent with a copy of the revocation or make a reasonable effort to provide the noncustodial parent with a copy of the revocation. Also, you must attach a copy of the revocation to your tax return for each year you are claiming the exemption as a result of the revocation. You must also keep for your records a copy of the revocation and evidence of delivery of the notice to the noncustodial parent, or of reasonable efforts to provide actual notice."

If you did not sign such an "open ended"part II but signed a 8332 form part I then that only applies to the year signed so there is noting to revoke. Simply do not supply the non-custodial parent with a new 8332 for this year.

You can revoke on the Form 8332 itself. You will have to do it manually as there is no way to do it in the program. If you efile, you will need to mail the form separately.

What if I’m e-filing?

If you're e-filing your federal tax return, be sure to send in a signed copy of Form 8332 (or the waiver) separately to the IRS along with Form 8453.

You can find Form 8453 in TurboTax once you sign back into your return after your return has been e-filed and accepted. You can also find Form 8453 at the IRS website.

You don't have to send in Form 8332 for your state return.
