topic How to adjust something manually when TurboTax miscalcuates it? in Get your taxes done using TurboTax

For some reason, TurboTax has added my state taxes to my federal taxes, so my federal tax refund is greater than the amount paid into federal taxes in 2019. I double checked and the input is correct, but on the 1040 it shows the incorrect (federal plus state) amount. Any idea how I fix this? Have tried deleting the w2, but still has the error.

Since we can't see your tax return, we will have to guess, but there are three situations in which your tax refund can be larger than the amount of federal taxes you withheld:

Earned Income Credit

Child Tax Credit

American Opportunity Credit

Did you have any of these credits? You would see them on your form 1040, lines 18a, 18b, and 18c.

At the end Turbo Tax shows you the combined amounts for federal and state. But that is only for your info. What lines or lines on the actual 1040 are wrong or adds the state? Is it line 17 for withholding? Where is the state added?
