Well, the cat is going to be out of the bag soon now. When they try to file and claim her, their e-file will be rejected because her SSN has already been filed on a tax return. Get ready for a talk with the in-laws.

You could still amend and change to filing MFS if you really need to --- but amending takes about 4 months And you cannot amend until your return has been fully processed. So....good luck and Best Wishes.

If you do decide to amend your return to change to MFS, you must file the amended return by April 15. You cannot amend from joint to separate returns after the due date of the return, which is April 15.
