There are many reasons why you owe the state this year, such as:

Your income increased.

You deleted a dependent.

You changed your filing status.

Your withholding wasn't enough to cover the state tax on your income.

I recommend that you make a line by line comparison between this year and last year's return. Also check the information you entered into TurboTax to make sure they were entered correctly.

If you don't want to owe state tax at the end of the year, have your employer withhold more state tax from your pay. Every state has a form similar to the federal Form W-4 for adjusting your state tax withholding, but each state is different. You can probably get the form from your employer's payroll department. Make sure they understand that you want to change only your state withholding, not the federal withholding.
