Deluxe is currently $40 (price usually goes up on March 1)

State is also a separate 40 in all versions above the Free Edition

If you select to have the fees deducted from your refund there is an EXTRA 39.99 Refund Processing Service charge (44.99 for California)

This is a very helpful thread and clarifies exactly what I was wondering. When I filed my taxes, it was not made clear that an extra $40 would be deducted because I chose to have the fee processed from my transaction. I'm sure this was in the fine print, but I think that this is another good example of how TurbotTax/Intuit is somewhat an exploitative monopoly. Why was this entire process not more transparent? Why are they allowed to market their service as allegedly free, when it never really is now? Moreover, where are the competitors who could take down Intuit and create a more diverse landscape for this market - hello, capitalism, are you there, it's me? Anyway, I will keep using Intuit until I switch to a real CPA.

You had to agree to it on several screens before you filed. Here's a couple. You have to go slow and read the screens and watch what you click. You get going fast and it's easy to click on the wrong button to continue.

Same thing happened to me - then i noticed, as i clicked 'live help' ... it auto charged me to $120. Though annoying and no warning, I will say having a real CPA review ahead of submitting, makes me feel like I did them 100% correctly https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/online/ click the "LIVE" box and you will see the price increase. I even called TT to see what was going on, they said oh it's a glitch so no sure if the live help up front was supposed to be free or if the rep didnt know about this backend system price upgrade but makes sense if you enlisted a live CPA to review your documents.

They really are scum. Charged me $110, nowhere did I see I upgraded to deluxe. Asked for a refund, didn’t even get an email the case had been closed. I know for a fact a billion dollar company can afford to refund $110 to someone who only makes $33k. I’m never using TurboTax again as long as I live. Leeches.

@Elliearnoldx In late December of 2017, Congress passed the largest tax reform bill in over 30 years. Almost every individual taxpayer was affected by these changes, as was many businesses. With the new tax changes, TurboTax Free Edition (and TurboTax Live Basic) are intended for taxpayers with very simple returns that can fit on the new 1040 form without any schedules.

Depending on what your tax situation was in 2018, you might need to use new tax forms to claim the same deductions, credits, or forms of income. Some of the situations that are now in TurboTax Deluxe and TurboTax Live Deluxe, instead of in Free Edition, include:

Student loan interest deduction
Retirement savings contribution credit for 401(k) and IRA contributions
Education credits
Child dependent care credit
