Unemployment compensation is taxable income and must be entered on your federal return. Go to Federal>

Wages & Income >Unemployment Go carefully through the screens--read them as you go. You will be able to enter the amount of tax that was withheld.

You are supposed to file all of your income on your federal and state tax returns. It doesn't matter whether you had taxes withheld or not.

That being said, whether or not this will be a problem for you in the future depends on whether you owe more tax to the IRS, or they owe you more of refund.

Either way, the best way to handle this is to include your 1099-G form on your tax return. If you have already filed your 2019 tax returns, you can amend in a few weeks.

Sign in to your Turbo Tax account.

Scroll down to Your tax return & documents, click Show on the right.

Select 2019 and then click Amend (change) return.

Once you get to the screen that asks what you need to change, select 1099-G form.

Carefully follow the instructions to finish your return. Don't worry if your refund changes to $0. This is normal on amended returns. If you will get more money back by amending, the refund box will show you the amount. If you owe, the number will appear in red.

When finished, follow the instructions for printing and mailing your amended return as amendments can't be e-filed.

The Amend feature will not be available until mid-February.
