The TurboTax Free online edition is free if the tax data you enter is supported by the Free edition. If you have entered tax data that is not supported then you have to upgrade to the Deluxe edition or higher, which are not free.

If you are eligible you can use the TurboTax Free File Program which is free to file both a federal and state tax return. The Free File Program edition is a full featured personal tax program and on a separate website from the TurboTax online editions.

The Free File program will be available in mid-January - https://turbotax.intuit.com/taxfreedom/

Only when you use this version is truly free. www.freefile.intuit.com Turbo Tax keeps it on a separate website.
