Not sure what you mean by "claimed nothing"--what do you think you could have claimed? Were you a full-time student? Are you referring to education credits? How old were you? Did you file a tax return that said you could be claimed as someone else's dependent?

@xmasbaby0 I work full-time and go to school full-time, I live alone. I could have claimed myself on my income taxes if my parents had not stated that they would claim me. Because they said they would claim me, I did not claim myself last year as a dependent. I'm 19 years old, was 18 at the time of filing last years taxes but taking care of myself for half of the year of 2018, I moved out in late-May after graduation.

If you were 18 at the time your parents could claim you and would have been able to enter the education credits on their own return. The rule is that is if you can be claimed you must say on your own tax return that you can be claimed as a dependent on someone else's tax return--even if they do not claim you.

WHO CAN I CLAIM AS A DEPENDENT?

You can claim a child, relative, friend, fiance (etc.) as a dependent on your 2018 taxes as long as they meet the following requirements:

Qualifying child

• They are related to you.

• They cannot be claimed as a dependent by someone else.

• They are a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.

• They are not filing a joint return with their spouse.

• They are under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).

No age limit for permanently and totally disabled children

  • They live with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply).

Qualifying relative

• They don't have to be related to you (despite the name).

• They cannot be claimed as a dependent by someone else.

• They are a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.

• They are not filing a joint return with their spouse.

• They lived with you the entire year.

• They made less than $4,150 in 2018

• You provided more than half of their financial support. More info

When you add someone as a dependent, we'll ask a series of questions to make sure you can claim them.

Related Information:

• Does a dependent have to live with me?

• What does "financially support another person" mean?

• Can I claim a newborn baby?
