It did not change to midnight on the east coast being the deadline for the west coast. What makes you think it did? The rule is midnight in YOUR time zone.

My return was rejected by the IRS. Turbo Tax says I filed my return on October 16, 1:08 AM EDT

I live in Washington State. It was filed on October 15th 10:08 PM PDT where I filed my return!!!

(I wasn't traveling, I was at home)

The date on the email that TurboTax sent depends on the date where the email originated and has nothing to do with date of filing.

If the IRS rejected it then was was the reject message and reject code?

I wonder if everybody on the west coast who filed between 9pm and 12am PDT got screwed?

Look at your rejection email again. It has a rejection code or message. What does it say?

I think if you tried to efile after midnight Turbo Tax would not have even let you submit it. Did you get the first confirmation email saying it was transmitted? Then there is a second email saying if the IRS Accepted or Rejected it. If it Rejected you could have fixed it and had until Oct 20 to efile again.

Yours is the only post I have seen with this complaint so if it was systemic thousands would have posted about this issue.

Next ... once you click on the submit button your return goes to a holding server while it waits for the feds & state to fetch the returns for acceptance and processing. Turbotax has nothing to do with this process so if the returns were filed late it was not a TT problem. One should never wait until the last minutes to file because the system cannot handle the flood of filers and some will simply be late. So look again at the times you submitted the returns and the time it was accepted for processing. Also review the emails ... was it rejected ?

There are about 1000 reasons that the IRS will reject a e-file for, but filing after midnight is not one of them. Filing after Oct 15 simply will not take place at all and cannot "reject".

Again, what was the reject code? It probably has nothing to do with the time filed. (The most common reject is that the 2017 AGI did not match).
