Total tax is on 1040 line 15. Where are you seeing to subtract line 13 from 46?

FAFSA wants income tax amount. It directs you to subtract line 13 from 46.

What tax year is FAFSA referring to and what form is FAFSA referring to? Subtracting Line 13 from Line 46 does not make any sense for a 2018 tax return or for a 2017 tax return.

me and my wife did joint filling 2018, and she is applying for fafsa today and this question came up for her, i tried to find but can't see where is this schedule 2,my return doesn’t have schedule 2 line 46 can anyone help on this what to do?

The tax return forms for 2018 have a Form 1040 and six possible schedules. Some people do not need ANY of those six schedules, and some people need only one or maybe a few of them. If you do not have a schedule 2 it is because your tax situation did not require it. What EXACTLY are you trying to find on that schedule?

Enter the amount of your(and your spouse's) income tax of 2018.This is the total amount of IRS Form 1040

so we are not sure what to enter

Schedule 2, line 46 is the "Excess advance premium tax credit from form 8962" (Heath care credit). If yiu do not have any such credit and no schedule 2, then that amount would be zero so the answer is line 13 minus zero is line 13.

For Fafsa.....If you don't have schedule 2 there is nothing to subtract from line 13.

The following is provided by fafsa.ed.gov none of which answer the issue of having nothing on line 13 and no schedule 2-line 46:

Parents’ 2018 U.S. Income Tax Paid

This is question 85 on the FAFSA.

The response indicates the amount of U.S. income tax paid as reported on the student’s parents’ 2018 income tax return. If the total is a negative amount, the amount reported should be zero (0).

If the student’s parents are “married/remarried” and filed a joint tax return, or are single, use the total of IRS Form 1040 line 13, minus line 46 of Schedule 2 and enter the amount.

If the parents filed separate tax returns, subtract line 46 of Schedule 2 from line 13 of IRS Form 1040 from both tax returns and enter the total amount.

If one or both parents will file a federal tax return, but have not yet filed, subtract line 46 of Schedule 2 from line 13 of IRS Form 1040 from both tax returns to estimate the amount.

The Parent Taxes Paid Calculator can be used to estimate the total taxes paid if a 2018 tax form will be filed, but has not yet been completed.

If the student is Dependent, the response cannot be blank unless the student’s parents will not file a tax return.

Line 46 is the excess premium tax credit repayment. If there was not an amount for that, then schedule 2 would likely not be included with the tax return.

The total of schedule 2 would be included in the amount on line 11 of form 1040. You might see the tax amount on line 11(a), and if line 11 is the same amount, then there would be nothing on line 46 of schedule 2.

More than likely, there is no entry on line 46 of your return, so you would enter the amount on line 13, which appears to be -0- in your case.

Mine is blank too and I don't have a Schedule 2, so I guess $0 is fine? It bothers me because when I check my SAR, it shows up as with an "h" and next to it, it says,"$0 ASSUMED".
