Yes - you can e-file your federal return and then subsequently mail in your state return in TurboTax.

State income tax returns can either be e-filed with your federal return, or e-filed or mailed after your federal return has already been accepted by the IRS, which normally takes a day or two.

When you get to the File section in the program, you can select e-file for your federal and print and mail for your state return. TurboTax will ensure that you have all the forms you need when you mail your state return.

I'm not being given the option to file my state return by mail... my only option is to pay with the federal (which I do not want to do, as mailing is free) or to delete my state return. There is no print option... Any thoughts?

There's a lot of unclarity over the PA filing. Because there was no clear route to paper filing, and I didn't know exactly what forms to mail or where to mail them, I wound up paying to e-file, which was annoying. I hope that TT fixes this for the future.

I think there is no getting around e-filing federal, as mentioned in the first answer. One you e-file federal, there is supposedly an option to print your state return to mail, but only after you have successfully paid for and completed your federal e-file. I haven't tried it yet, but $39.99 for state e-file is way more than just a few years ago.

I just printed all of the Oregon, a copy of Fed form and W2s and sent it all in...better too many forms than not enough. They can toss what they don't need. My TT came with free fed e-file and $19.99 state. Since my refund from OR. is only $14 I would lose $5.99 by efiling...

Still a problem, and still no answer. I have e-filed the federal (choosing to mail a check), and chose wait on the state, as I can't choose mail a return. Worse, when I print the instructions and Arizona return, the instructions are for e-filing, not mailing. I know Intuit wants to sell state e-filing services, but this is NOT helpful at all. Lousy customer service yet again.

Yes. In the 2018 online version, when you're ready to file, you'll have to select the "file by mail" button first (vs. the "efile" button.) Then you'll be presented with a screen where you can select "efile" or "mail" for your Federal return, and "efile" or "mail" for your State return, before continuing.
