There are two different PINs entered in different places.

The 6 digit IP PIN is best entered in "other tax situations" as described below. An IP PIN is only issued to confirmed victims of identity theft.

Separately, EVERYONE needs a 5 digit e-filing PIN, which is a required, though weaker, form of identity confirmation. You choose a 5 digit e-filing PIN the first time you e-file, and use it every year thereafter. If you don't remember it, you can use your AGI (adjusted gross income) from last year's tax return.

You don't need to use the same self-select PIN forever, you can choose a new one (for use next time) each year.
You don't need the 5 digit PIN at all if your prior AGI is known, and IRS has the same number on file for you.
It's best to keep track of your 5-digit PIN since AGI matching problems abound. You can e-file with the 5-digit PIN alone (unless IRS has added you to the 6-digit IP PIN list too).

That there are 2 different PINS was the solution. We have a 6 digit PIN from the IRS, and did not realize it was separate and distinct from the PIN that TT required. It seems to me that TT could have done a better job of explaining that, but .... all's well that ends well. Thank you, Opus, for your advice, it resolved the quandry.

Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
Click on Other Tax Situations
Scroll down to Other Return Info
On Identity Protection PIN, click the start button

The 99.99% fked up blabbers that acted "smart" were just pointing the confused, the blind to a dark hell hole that spun in circles! THAT copied/pasted link was USELESS!
