Are you referring to a Tax Return Transcript from the IRS? If so, this means your return has already been filed for the year on the transcript. Or are you referring to a Wage and Income Transcript? If so, you can use the data there to file your return.

Can I submit a prior year tax return using a Wage and Income Transcript if I do not have a copy of the original W-2 from an employer? I worked for so many one-time event agencies that the last for digits, accompanied with a name such : "DEE..." (name of company shortened in transcript). I do not know where to begin.

If you are using the transcript to complete a prior year return that you will need to mail in then you can enter any 9 digit number for the employer's EIN ... it doesn't matter.

And the federal transcripts do NOT have any state or local information on them ... if you need to file a state or local return you must get a copy of the W-2 from the employer or get a copy from the SS administration for a fee.

Just to be clear, If I can't get my w-2, can I still file my taxes for 2020 with a tax return transcript or an account transcript? or can I get a different form?

when I go to the irs website it only gives me these two options to get by mail. I know I cant file my taxes till at least January but still wanna be prepared.

@rvalencia3234 Tax year 2020 is not even over. Your employer(s) has until February 1 2021 to issue your 2020 W-2. Do you have some reason to believe you will not get your W-2? Does your employer have the correct address to send it to? If not---it is your responsibility to make sure you have provided that address to them. The IRS is not going to have a wage and income transcript for 2020 for you in early January. You might be worried for no reason.

Here are the ways to get your 2020 W-2---but you cannot get it until 2021.

Some employers allow you to import the W-2 through the software, but for security reasons you still need information from the actual W-2 to import it. You might need to phone, drop in, email and/or snail mail an old employer to make sure they know where to send your W-2.

https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/2561916-how-can-i-get-a-copy-of-my-w-2

https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1934390-how-do-i-import-my-W-2

Other ways to get W-2’s:

Pay Social Security $90 per W-2:

You can get a wage and income transcript from the IRS: It will not show the actual W-2, 1099’s, etc, but will show the income information the IRS received. It will not, however, show your state information. It will only show the federal information.

You do NOT need to enter the 1099-NEC in the Sch C section ... just skip it and enter the income in the next section ...

Here is the skinny ... you can use the transript to PAPER file the return but it cannot be efiled since the transcript doesn't have the employer's EIN on it and it has no STATE info on it for the state return. Attach a copy of the transcript to the return when you mail it in.

To get a copy of a W-2 from Social Security that will have the state info on it & the employer's EIN.... https://faq.ssa.gov/en-us/Topic/article/KA-02501

https://www.irs.gov/help-resources/tools-faqs/faqs-for-individuals/frequently-asked-tax-questions-an...
