I'm 29 and I made around 9,000 in 2017. I lived with my parents for 5 months and moved out. I found out my dad claimed me as dependent and I owe the IRS 100.00 because he claimed me. I thought someone can't be claimed if they made over 4,000. I was hoping to get 646.00 back and now I owe 100.00, its a very low blow.

You cannot be claimed as a dependent by your father. You had over $4050 in income. Your dad will need to amend his tax return. You can file your own tax return claiming your own exemption but you must print sign and mail it instead of e-filing it. Make sure your dad knows why he must amend.

WHO CAN I CLAIM AS A DEPENDENT?

You can claim a child, relative, friend, fiance (etc.) as a dependent on your 2017 taxes as long as they meet the following requirements:

Qualifying child

• They are related to you.

• They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.

• They are a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.

• They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.

• They are under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).

• They live with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply).

Qualifying relative

• They don't have to be related to you (despite the name).

• They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
