It's a year later, and I'm having this same issue my first time using TT. In fact, the whole experience is scaring me off because I don't find any of TT user-friendly at all! I consider myself pretty intelligent, well-versed in family financials, and have an excellent command of English, but I'm pretty worried right now! I may just run to an accountant :(

If your spouse had their own HDHP but did not have an HSA, you can receive this error.

If this applies, when TurboTax asks if your spouse had an HDHP, answer None (even if she was not covered under your Family plan).

Here's more info on Lapse in HDHP Coverage.

The response here doesn't make sense. My spouse is covered under ths same family plan as me, and she doesn't have any of her own HDHP from other employment. The notice that says - it looks like your spouses HDHP lapsed makes no sense at all.

Did you mean "answer None (even if she was COVERED under your Family plan)."???

The "lapse" is caused by TurboTax misunderstanding your input. If one spouse does not have an HSA, then they never go through their part of the HSA interview wherein they tell TurboTax what type of HDHP coverage they had. Hence, TurboTax thinks they don't have any HDHP coverage for the current year (2024).

But when you answer "Family" or "Self" to the question about HDHP coverage for that spouse for December 1, 2023, you have just told TurboTax that that spouse had coverage in 2023.

This is why TurboTax thinks there has been a lapse, when there actually hasn't been one. And this is why it is OK to tell TurboTax "NONE" for that spouse on the question about 2023. It is to put an end to TurboTax's confusion.
