If you filed Married Filing Jointly, it is usually the best tax filing status. Once you file a joint return, you can't choose to file separate returns for that year after the due date of the return.

You can only file Head of Household if you are filing separately and he did not live with you the last six months of the year and you have a qualifying child or relative.

You may be able to file as head of household if you meet all the following requirements.

You are unmarried or considered unmarried on the last day of the year.

You paid more than half the cost of keeping up a home for the year.

A qualifying person lived with you in the home for more than half the year
