topic Was I apparently supposed to file a non-resident D-40 form for a job I had in DC? in Get your taxes done using TurboTax

Let me start by saying that this was the first time I used TurboTax so my apologies if this question seems rather silly.

To make a long story somewhat short, I had a job in DC that lasted for a few weeks. I put this information into TurboTax and at the very end I was told that I had to mail in my tax papers to the office in DC because you can not e-file if you were a nonresident. I printed them out and learned that I was not going to receive a DC refund. However, there was nothing else on the print-out. The only thing that printed was the confirmation page telling me the address to send my files to.

I had no idea what to do so I ended up sending a copy of my entire tax printout, that I had printed earlier when I filed to the IRS and to my home state, in an envelope to the marked DC address. It was only until today, when I was going through the paperwork, that I noticed something at the top saying something along the lines of "Form D-40B shows that you are not receiving a refund." Now, there was no D-40B in any of the papers that I sent. I also saw on other answers that you are only to send this form if you are requesting a refund, which I am not. So, am I done with my DC filing or should I go ahead and send this form to them?

Hopefully everything made sense. Thank you all.

DC has reciprocity with every single state. As such, only residents of DC file tax returns with DC. Nonresidents of DC only file the Form D-40B- Nonresident Request for Refund -if taxes were withheld for DC, as this is an error.

If you didn't live in DC, and didn't have DC taxes taken out by mistake, then you don't have anything to mail to DC.

Did you have DC taxes withheld? (I'm assuming not)
