      <description>&lt;P&gt;You file according to your marital status on December 31. &amp;nbsp;So you can either file a joint return with your spouse (married filing jointly) or you and your spouse can each file a separate return ( married filing separately).&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;Joint filing usually has the lowest tax or largest refund, even if one spouse doesn't work or your incomes are very different.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;You don't qualify to file as head of household.&lt;/P&gt;</description>
