the property was part of a trust for me and I lived in it in 2016 but did not pay any property taxes. Did not take ownership until 2017. Does that status then make a difference or not?

TurboTax asks you whether you own a home to walk through...

TurboTax asks you whether you own a home to walk through a questionnaire to allow you to deduct mortgage interest, property taxes and home energy credits.

If you did not own a home in 2016, then just walk through the questionnaire without entering anything, and you'll be fine.
