I haven’t even efiled in turbo yet and my filing status is incorrect and I followed the steps it won’t let me fix it

Often, you may inadvertently choose the wrong filing status. If you want to change to Head of Household, follow theses steps:

Click on Personal Info, You & Your Family,

· Scroll to Your Filing Status,

· Click Edit,

· Check the box Change my filing status,

· Check Head of Household (the program will ask you questions to determine if you qualify for HOH).

When you enter both your and your dependent information, TurboTax will offer Head of Household (HOH) as your filing status if you qualify as Head of Household.

You can qualify for Head of Household if you:

Were unmarried as of December 31, 2020 and
Paid more than half the cost to run your (or a qualifying parent's) home this year (rent, mortgage, utilities, etc.) and
Supported a qualifying person.

If you were still legally married as of December 31, 2020 and a child lives with you, you can qualify for Head of Household under a slightly different set of rules.

Even if you were legally married as of December 31, you are considered unmarried (and therefore eligible for Head of Household) if all 5 of these conditions apply:

You won't be filing jointly with your spouse
Your spouse didn't live in your home after June (temporary absences due to illness, school, vacation, business, or military service don't count)
Your home was your child's, stepchild's, or foster child's main home for more than half the year (non-child dependents in your home don't qualify)
You paid more than half the costs of keeping up your home during the tax year
You meet the qualifications to claim the child as your dependent, even if the other (noncustodial) parent is actually claiming the child as a dependent on their return

You can also be considered unmarried for Head of Household if your spouse was a nonresident alien at any time during the tax year and you're not treating them as a resident alien.

After you answer all the questions about yourself and your dependents at the beginning of your return, we'll let you know if your situation qualifies for Head of Household.

You can also revisit these questions by selecting

My Info (online) or
Personal Info (software), and then
select Edit next to your name or your dependent's.

When I go to change the filing status. I am not given an option of HOH and I have a dependent listed under family

To select Head of Household (HoH) as a filing status, you originally select Single and then as you go through the interview on your dependents, TurboTax will change the status to HoH at the end.

To do this please follow these steps:

While you are in your return, click My Info in the black bar at the left of your screen.
Click Edit next to Filing Status.
On the Let's confirm your marital status screen, select the Single radio button and click Continue.
On the screen, Your children and others you support make sure the child has Dependent showing in the Status column.
If they are not listed as a dependent, click Edit next to their name and go through the interview to satisfy the dependent requirements.
Continue to the screen, Did you pay more than half the cost to keep up your home in 2020? Mark the Yes radio button.
TurboTax will change your status to Head of Household.

Hello, I am the head of household and wanted to correct the information on my amended tax return. TurboTax is stating that I am single and not considered to be the head of household since I don’t have a dependents. I was unable to locate the information you provided. I did not see that specific question. Do you now where I can find it?

If you don't have a dependent you will not qualify for Head of Household.

Head of household is a filing status for single or unmarried taxpayers who have maintained a home for a qualifying person, such as a child or relative.

This filing status provides a larger standard deduction and more generous tax rates for calculating federal income tax than the Single filing status.

@PeggyHunt There are multiple posts in this thread from other users. What "same problem" are you having? Are you trying to file as Head of Household?

To change your filing status, try following these steps:

Login to Turbo Tax.
On the left side of the screen, click My Info.
Under My info, scroll down and click edit next to your filing status.

If the IRS has accepted your return as filed then you must amend your tax return once the IRS has had a chance to process it. For your convenience I will add information about who qualifies for Head of Household so that you can be confident of your change in filing status.

You will be able to access and file an amended return on February 23rd (Form 1040-X).

Be sure to read all the instructions carefully, before you begin, so that TurboTax knows the original numbers and the changed numbers for your amendment.
