I am a college professor. My job and permanent residence were in Texas during 2016, but I worked for 7 weeks teaching in the summer in another state (Minnesota). I rented an apartment for 2 months in Minnesota for this. Does this mean that I lived in two states for tax purposes?

No. Your temporary absence from home does not constitute a change in residency. But you must file a non-resident Minnesota tax return. Minnesota, like all other states with an income tax, taxes non-residents on earnings gained from working within its borders. (Minnesota's only exception is for residents of Michigan or North Dakota, because Minnesota has tax reciprocity with those two states.)

In the Personal Info section of TurboTax, answer Yes to the question about earning income in other states, and then select Minnesota as the other state. Leave your state of residence as Texas.
