The reject code IND- 511 is "This return has been rejected by the IRS because the taxpayer's Social Security Number (SSN) has been listed as the spouse SSN on another tax return with filing status Married Filing Separately."

To correct this first verify that your SSN is accurate, if so then the filing status on your return will need to be changed. Someone else has filed you as their spouse on a Married Filing Separately return, your filing status on this return cannot be Single, Married Filing Jointly, or Qualifying Widower.

If you feel that this reject has been received in error, and you do not want to change your filing status, you may print and file by mail.

https://ttlc.intuit.com/replies/3401713

If you are married, whether you file jointly or separately, you cannot be claimed as a dependent. If he filed married filing separately, you must also file the same. You must include your spouse's name and social security number on your return.

There are certain tax implications to this choice. The standard deduction is less for Married Filing Separately ($12,200 in 2019) versus Married Filing Jointly ($24,400 in 2019). Opting for the Married Filing Separately status excludes taxpayers from certain tax credits, such as the Earned Income Credit or education credits.

Finally, in the event that you live in a community property state, you will have to list your spouse's income, tax liability, withholding, etc. on your return regardless of filing status.

First, go back and delete the information in TurboTax and re-enter it. Try a resubmission. That rejection is normally due to information on your tax return not matching what the social security administration has on file for you.

If it rejects again, you will need to contact your local social security office to verify what is on record for you.

If you can find and resolve the issue there you will be able to e-file. If not, you will need to print, sign and mail in your returns.
