Due to nonpayment of premiums, my Obamacare coverage was cancelled retroactively for Nov & Dec. But when I select the option to pick the 10 months I was covered, I don't get prompted for 1095-A info. It appears I need to instead say I had health insurance coverage all year - even though technically I did not.

Yes, that is exactly what I did and it worked perfectly. Actually, my recollection is that the other option would have been to say at the outset that I had health insurance all year then enter my 1095A info and NOT backtrack to change it. The outcome is the same. However, I just felt more comfortable backtracking and de-selecting Nov & Dec. I felt it was more honest.

Since you have already entered the 10 months coverage from your 1095-A. The system will not calculate any penalty because your gap period without coverage is less than 3 months.

To enter Health Insurance information, please follow these steps using your Desktop/ CD/ Download version.

Click on Federal Taxes tab

Then, click on the Health Insurance tab just below it

Select I'll pick which months I had it (see Slide 1 attached)

Click on Continue

Check all the boxes except Nov and Dec (see Slide 2 attached)

Click on Continue

Select the reason for the 2 months (see Slide 3 attached)

Click Continue. The next page should tell you "Based on your situation, the penalty has been waived."

Then, click on Continue to answer the questions through the interview pages

You will come to a page asking for type of plan, select the 1095-A. Then, the following page will ask for the detail of the 1095-A information, Besure to fill out exactly from the information on your form (see Slide 4 attached)

Then, click on Continue to save your work

ScottT, this is not quite my scenario because none of the reasons listed for getting penalty waived apply to me. Therefore, when I select none of those reasons and then continue, I will not get prompted for 1095-A info. The only way to get prompted for 1095-A is to say I had insurance all year. After doing so and entering my 1095-A info, I found I can then backtrack to de-select Nov and Dec and it appears to have saved my 1095-A. Please address my unusual situation if you would.

So, I ran a test for you and the program will not ask you to enter your 1095-A. Because your gap period without insurance is less than 3 months the penalty is waived. To answer the health insurance question in your account, go to the Health Insurance tab, select I'll pick which months I had it. Click Continue then check all the months except Nov & Dec. Then, click Continue. At the situation page, since nothing apply in your situation, leave it blank then click Continue. Then, that is all you need to do.

Thank you Scott, but I do have a 1095-A that needs to be entered. If, from outset, I had followed your steps above, I would never get prompted to enter my 1095-A but I need to do that. So the only workaround I can determine is to first say I had insurance all year, enter my 1095-A info, then backtrack and change answer to say I had for only 10 months. Or, are you actually agreeing with my workaround strategy? Thanks!

Yes, backtrack and uncheck Nov & Dec. Your penalty should be waived and you do not need to enter any 1095-A information from there on. Remember, to leave the situation questions page blank and continue. See my previous comment.
