Want to eliminate not needed State updates? Forms, File | Remove State Return, states are NOT listed. When I request to get updates it show down loading these States.

When requesting updates get state updates for States I do not need.

Shows Downloading CA when I filed in CA in years past but have since move. Do not need those States. I have been using Turbo Tax for many years. Only need one state. Somewhere it remembers that I had used that state in the past so it is still downloading updates.

At this point in time...we can do nothing about those, .......that was apparently someone's management decision to pre-download any states that you ever used at any time

(mine downloaded 6 states over DSL and it took forever...and I'll only use 2 of them).

So you just ignore the pre-downloaded states for the moment (you don't pay for any that you don't actually use), and for whatever state you DO use, you will select that state as your "free" state, and download it and use it, when it becomes available..

Some states won't download at all yet, so it depends on what state you need.and the states that do download (like the 6 I received) will actually be the 2015 state forms as a temporary placeholders. The actual final 2016 state forms may be quite different, and I wouldn't expect to see them until sometime in January.

This problem continues to exist!

I had to prepare an AZ return 10 years ago, due to a death of a family member. Ever since then, every year my TurboTax program downloads and updates the Arizona state software even though I don't use AZ and don't want it.

Can't this be removed from my profile? Can I remove it from my computer?

when you open your return there is a "file" tab at the top left. click on that tab there's a link to remove state

Isn't that option to remove the state RETURN?

I want to remove the state software from my computer. I live in NC. I only file in NC. I don't want AZ software on my computer. I don't want AZ software updates.

Sorry, but as I noted above, way back in 2016 or 2017...... you can't stop those, and TTX hasn't ever provided a way to get rid of them. Yes....They are unneeded PITA downloads that waste space and time...

The only way my 2 or 3 old unneeded states were stopped from downloading, is when I installed TTX on an entirely new computer (when I replaced my old one).

Dear Turbo Tax,

I find your software very helpful and useful. However over the many years of doing student taxes for my children I have accumulated multiple states over the years, but I now only need the state I reside in. The wasted time for all the unnecessary downloading states frustrates me, especially when Turbo Tax detects a update and then all over again all the downloads happens. Please install a download menu or a walkthrough that lets me choose what state or states I want downloaded. Lets be customer helpful and not this management dictated policy excuse. This is real feedback. Listen.

My old notes say.......

One user said......The list of states that you used is stored on your computer. When you get a new computer it starts over with an empty list. Getting a new computer is the only way I know to get rid of the unwanted states. At one time I asked them to tell us how to remove a state from the list, but they never responded.

Another user said.......The problem definitely resides in the registry. Since I went through the registry and removed MO, it has not come back with the updates. I think it is the list of state in Current User, Software, Intuit, TY16, then Needperstates - delete states listed, & PrefillPerStates - delete states list

somewhat similar. I always get a Ca download + my state of residence. while I'm not charged for the 2nd state, why am I getting CA since I never had any income in that state, never lived there, never filed a return? I did vacation there about 20 years ago.

I have the same problem, I lived in California 3 years ago and still get downloads for it. What is worse, is that I get downloads for New Jersey, which I have never even visited, let alone lived in. I would not mind except it takes time to download.

If you do not need the New Jersey state return, you can delete the return by Click File in the upper left-hand corner of the screen.

Remove state return is an option.

As a precaution, you may want to save your tax return before removing the state tax return. @Butch7
