topic If my taxes have already been accepted how do i go back and show the estimated state taxes i paid in 2016 for my 2017 taxes? in Get your taxes done using TurboTax

Last year i was asked if i wanted to use my 2016 state taxes to pay estimated taxes for 2017, which i did. I have already done my taxes this year and it has been accepted, however i did not include the estimated taxes i paid in 2016 (was not asked about it when going through all the steps, i assumed since ive done my taxes with TT every year they would transfer that information as well). My estimated tax payment was not included and now i owe the state. Im not sure how to correct this as my returns have already been accepted. I do not itemize any deductions? My taxes are simple with 1 dependant but i knew i would make more money in 2017

You'll prepare an amended return. While TurboTax will save the information, it cannot assume that you actually made the payments. So, if you did pay additional estimated taxes, you will want to go back into the Federal Income section, and under Credits and Deductions, click on the link for Taxes Already Paid. You will be assisted to make this adjustment.

The feature to prepare amended returns has not yet been turned on, so you will need to wait until it will (perhaps another week or so). You will not need to pay the amount stated as due, since the amended return will adjust that amount. Please feel free to reach out to us when this feature is available and we will be happy to help walk you through this.

You will be able to prepare the return through TurboTax, yes, but you will print out the forms because an amended return usually must be mailed in. (There are a few states that accept electronic amended returns. I know NY is one of them, but there may be others. Feel free to comment back if you wish).
