That is not enough information . We do not know your filing status, how much you had withheld, if you have dependents, student loan interest, etc. If your refund seems low compared to your 2016 refund, and your income was similar, then print out both of those returns and compare them side by side.

Why do you think it should be higher? It seems right, and is about the perfect way for things to happen (the perfect amount of taxes were withheld from your paychecks).

If you want a non-interest savings account with the US government, you can change your W-4 with your employer to have more taxes taken out of your pay, then you would receive a larger tax refund (because you would PAY more tax throughout the year).

Using ROUGH numbers:

If you are a Single person with no other dependents, and use the Standard Deduction, the first $10,000 is tax free. That leaves $14,000 subject to tax.

The first $10,000 is taxed at 10%. That gives $1000 of tax.

The rest of your income ($4000) is taxed at 15%, which is an additional $600

So there should be a total of about $1600 of taxes.

You had $1750 of tax withheld, which would result in roughly a $150 refund.

If there are other circumstances that you have not mentioned that you think should increase your refund, please post back with details.
