If your gambling winnings were $10,000 or less then you are not required to file a nonresident New Jersey return.

I was given the $10,000 answer at the Casio I won $1,500 at in NJ. I am from PA. it makes sense because the W2 G doesn’t include NJ . It is for Fed purpose. But Turbo Tax is trying to force me to file a out of state tax return with NJ even though it is not required and pay taxes on winning. There is no way to tell them about their errors. But I searched it out on NJ government web site and it clearly states what I was told at $10,000 it is taxable. This is only one of the major errors in turbo tax. They really can screw up your taxes.

Which amount is showing as taxable on the W2G, $10,000 or $1500? Please read this Turbo Tax article for more information. Please note the following quote from the link, "Nonresidents who receive income from New Jersey sources and who have total income from all sources (both inside and outside New Jersey) that exceeds the filing threshold amount for their filing status must file a New Jersey nonresident income tax return." This might be the reason that Turbo Tax suggests you file a NJ non resident return.
