Either solution will be equally effective. You can e-file the request for extension at the irs.gov website. Or you can print and mail Form 4868, making certain that it is postmarked before midnight on Monday, April 15, 2019.

Mailing addresses for Form 4868 can be found here: https://www.irs.gov/filing/where-to-file-addresses-for-businesses-and-tax-professionals-filing-form-...

If Turbo tax won't let me e-file an extension, can I e-file the extension at irs.gov?

My initial e-filed return was rejected because my son didn't check the "Can someone else claim you on their return" box. He had to file an amended return by mail. Since we have to wait until his return is accepted I have to file an extension. For some reason TurboTax will only allow me to do this by mail (it would be nice if I new why!!). So I wanted to know if I can file the extension at the IRS website or just mail the Form 4868. Mailing the extension may add a lot of time to when I can finally e-file my return.
