I've done with my Fed and State return - would like to file it/them but concerned that an 'update' will trigger a need to file an amended return(s)? How long should I wait before e-filing?

While there is no way to know for certain if it is "safe," I can tell you that if you file a tax return that is impacted by changes, TurboTax will send you an email informing you of the changes.

I can advise that Congress has not passed any of the proposed "extenders" to certain tax credits. There have been various bills introducing this legislation since 2018 and nothing has passed.

Credits and deductions proposed for extension include education expenses, mortgage interest points and residential energy expenses.

Neither house of Congress will be in session the week of March 18; the House will not be in session on every Friday between now and April 15, 2019.

As for the state, we can't advise without knowing your state. I will confirm that Virginia made changes in February.

It is my opinion that you are safe to file now.
