topic W2 Control number in Get your taxes done using TurboTax

I have seen so many people asking about the W2 control number. I, too, had a problem - my wife's and my control numbers were 1 and 2, and Turbotax didn't complain till it was doing final inspection before filing, when it said the control number should be 2 alphanumeric characters to be accepted by the IRS. I was frustrated and was about to write to my payroll company about why they put a number that is not acceptable. And then I thought, let me Google, and I found lots of posts from people with similar problems, and Intuit, and some others had answered, saying it is a useless number and the IRS does not care. So I put 01 and 02, and it worked.

But what I am wondering is that many of the answers go back to 3-4 years. And so why has TurboTax not fixed this easy fix? It should just accept any number or no number.
