Filing status changed to rejected on October 15 for Federal and State. It's not showing the rejection code. I'm trying to determine why it was rejected. How do I get the rejection code?

Here's how you can check: How to Check your E-file Status

Here's how you can fix it:

Sign in to your account and select the Fix my return button. Follow any “fix it” instructions to update the information causing the rejection.

Note: Not all rejections will have explicit guides to fix the information. You’ll need to navigate to the program area to address the cause of the rejection.

Time-saving Tip: If what you originally entered is correct, you won't be able to e-file. There's probably a data mismatch at the government, a dependent that's already been claimed, or some other situation beyond your control that prevents your return from being e-filed. In this case, your only option would be to print and mail in your return. This article will give you instruction on how to print and mail your return.

Additional reject instruction here.

When your 2024 e-file was rejected last year, you received an email with a rejection message or rejection code. We cannot see the email you received. Most rejections are for AGI. You do not need AGI in order to file by mail, and now the only way your 2024 return can be filed is by mail. E-filing is permanently closed for 2024 returns. Your 2024 return can only be filed by mail now in 2026. Print it, sign and date it in ink, and mail it.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
