My federal standard deduction including a disaster deduction was rolled over as a standard deduction on my Missouri forms. It doesn't match what Missouri says to use as standard deductions. Is this an error in your software? For the first time ever TurboTax wouldn't let me efile Missouri taxes and I'm scared this potential error is why.

Re: Missouri standard deduction

It depends. Missouri law explicitly states that your state standard deduction should match your federal standard deduction. If you claimed a Net Qualified Disaster Loss (which increases your federal standard deduction via Form 4684), Missouri honors that increase. However, the Missouri Department of Revenue (DOR) has a very specific rule for this:

To claim an increased standard deduction due to a disaster loss, you must file a paper return.

TurboTax "knows" this rule. If the software sees that your standard deduction is higher than the Missouri base amount (e.g., higher than $15,750 for Single or $31,500 for Married Filing Jointly for 2025) because of a disaster loss, it will often disable e-filing to prevent the state from automatically rejecting your return.

Missouri requires physical documentation to verify disaster-related increases to the standard deduction. When you claim this, you generally have to:

Write "net qualified disaster loss increase" on the dotted line of your MO-1040.

Attach a copy of your Federal Form 4684 and Federal Schedule A.

Manual “write-ins” and certain attachments aren’t always supported by standard e-filing, so the software requires a paper filing to keep you in line with state rules.
