I moved from New York to Virginia in May of 2025. I have a W2 from my NY employer for the 5 months. I went on Medicare in June of 2025. Do I need to file 2 seperate filings (one for NY and 1 for VA)?

It depends, you would have to file a Part Year New York return and a Part-Year Virginia return if you meet the filing thresholds. Starting Medicare by itself would not affect your requirement to file a tax return, you would have to look at your income.

NEW YORK

You must file a part-year New York return if you had any income during your resident period and your New York adjusted gross income Federal amount column exceeds your New York standard deduction.

Filing Information for New York State part-year residents

VIRGINIA

You must file an income tax return in Virginia if you are a part-year resident of Virginia and:

you are required to file a federal income tax return, and

you have Virginia adjusted gross income equal to or greater than $11,950 if single or married filing separately or $23,900 if married filing jointly

Who Must File
