Kentucky non resident forms:

Form 740NP Schedule A says I am entitled to a deduction larger than the standard. However, Form 740NP defaults to the standard deduction. It does not pull in the schedule A number, and will not allow me to enter it.

Also, schedule A does not pull in carryover amounts from the previous year.

TurboTax may have defaulted to the Standard Deduction on your Kentucky tax return ($3,270 in 2025) because you must

manually switch which deduction method you want to use within the software (Standard vs. Itemized).

Change Standard vs Itemized Deductions (or vice versa) on Kentucky State Tax Return:

Open or continue your return.

Go to the KY state interview.

Look for a screen titled "Itemized Deductions" or "Standard vs. Itemized."

Select the checkbox (or radio button) that says "I want to itemize my Kentucky deductions anyway." This will override the default.

TurboTax generally pulls carryovers (e.g., charitable contributions or investment interest) from the Federal return, not the previous year's State return.

Check Carryovers on Federal/State Tax Returns:

Open or continue your return.

Under Federal section, Click on Deductions & Credits.

Make sure that any carryovers from 2024 are listed in the Federal Schedule A section. Kentucky’s Schedule A should mirror the Federal Sc. A (with specific KY adjustments).

If this doesn't fix your issues, please let us know, and we can try other remedies.

I replied to the Email I received, but thought perhaps I was supposed to reply here. Also, additional information is included below.

I got to the "Itemized Deductions" screen, and there is no option to override the standard deduction, even though the KY schedule A says I am entitled to significantly more. The TurboTax help screen for form 740NP schedule A, says that the amount will carryover to the form 740NP, if it exceeds the standard deduction, but this does not happen. Also, the help screen needs to be updated because it references the wrong lines on the form.

The carryover amount from the previous year cannot come from the Federal return because it is a KY only amount. However, it appears that I can enter it manually, which will not do me any good anyway.
