As a beneficiary, I received a PA RK-1 showing income from an Estate. I'm using TurboTax Premier and do not see an option to enter the PA RK-1 for the PA state return.

I also received a Federal K-1, but all dollar fields are blank, no income to report, so I did not enter the K-1 in the federal return.

I saw a posting from several years ago that recommended entering the K-1 and putting $1 in the interest income field, so that TurboTax would then trigger opening the RK-1 form in the PA state return, as a work around to the problem.

Is this the correct way to handle this, and if so, do I then go back to the Federal K-1 and delete the $1, or delete the entire K-1 since all fields are blank?

Thank you.

Yes, entering the Federal K-1 with a minimal amount of income will allow TurboTax to transfer the K-1 information to your Pennsylvania state return. If you enter an amount less than 50 cents, your federal entry will be reported as zero, which is consistent with how the Estate was reported to you. You may then make the necessary adjustments to the PA RK-1 to report the activity for the state.

PatriciaV,

thank you for your reply and solution.

I apologize for the slow response, as I have been tied up in other matters and am just getting back to the tax return.

Just prior to receiving your response, I had tried the solution from several years ago that I mentioned in my post of entering $1 in the interest field. This did give me access to enter the income from the RK-1 on the Pa return and filled the other fields: Estate name, FEIN, and T/S/J notation. However it also ends up reporting and extra$1 of income in both returns.

I followed your direction and changed the $1 to $0.25, but that changed the Estate Name to "Untitled" and removed the FEIN, and T/S/J information from the PA return with no field to enter the data. The correct income amount is all that remained. How do I correct this?

Thank you very much for your guidance.

Have you tried entering an offsetting expense equal to the interest entry? That would net to zero and perhaps retain the estate information on your state return.

PatriciaV,

Thank you for your response.

I was trying to eliminate the bogus income entry, so that the return reflects what the actual K-1 and RK-1 show. your suggestion seems to just add to the issue although it does net to zero.

I believe that I have found a very simple solution, unless I am missing something.

I have been using the step by step view and never have looked at the Forms view. When I switched to Forms view, it allows me to enter the correct data, Estate name, FEIN, Income, etc. in the form J worksheet for the PA return, after leaving the income on the Federal K-1 at zero. This way, both the Federal and State returns reflect what was received in the K-1 and RK-1. When I run review, no errors are found. Am I missing something, or is the ultimate solution this simple?

Thank you.

Yes, using Forms mode is often the solution to entering information directly. As long as your return passes final review, you should be good.
