Your refund may have been offset. The IRS and state governments can intercept refunds to pay for certain past-due debts (such as back taxes, child support, or student loans).

How to check for an offset:

The IRS Hotline: Call (800) 304-3107 for automated details regarding tax offsets.

Official Notice: You will typically receive a letter in the mail explaining the specific debt and the amount withheld.

If you used "Pay with Refund":

If the IRS "Where’s My Refund" tool shows your funds were released but you haven't received them, please note that Intuit does not hold these funds. You will need to contact the Santa Barbara Tax Products Group (SBTPG) directly:

Website: SBTPG Support

@ user17720719992 wrote:

I checked with the IRS, and they confirmed that there are no outstanding debts to be offset. I then contacted SBTPG, and they informed me that they had transferred $5,464.94—under Trace #[phone number removed]246—to the bank account listed on my Form 1040. The problem is that the account listed on my 1040 is not my account. That account number belongs to MVB Bank—and, in fact, there are no MVB Bank branches located in Washington State. I suspect that an error occurred with the account number while I was preparing my 1040 through TurboTax, resulting in the funds being transferred to someone else. Is this a situation that requires me to hire an attorney to resolve?

I can perhaps solve part of the mystery, i.e., why MVB can become involved. MVB is the bank that is used by Credit Karma (an Intuit company) to handle refunds in certain circumstances. Here are some circumstances in which one's refund may go through/to MVB Bank. Did you use any of these?

It can be used if one chose to have their refund deposited to a Credit Karma MoneySpend account.

It can be used if one used the Refund Advance offer, which requires a Credit Karma checking account be opened or use an existing one.

It can be used if one chose the "Up to 5 days early offer" (the version with no fee), which requires a Credit Karma MoneySpend account be opened.

Here's the Credit Karma website, but you may first need to contact TurboTax Support to see what involved MVB and how to check on your refund with Credit Karma.

Credit Karma

https://www.creditkarma.com/

TurboTax Customer Support

Hours 5AM-9PM Pacific, 7 days/week

https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/contact/

Unfortunately, you won't be able to resolve anything account-specific in a user community forum. You'll need to phone TurboTax Support to ask them how MVB (Credit Karma's bank) became involved and how you ended up with an account there. I left contact info above.

Also ask them what should happen next, or if you need to actively withdraw it from MVB. While you have them on the phone, also ask them how to contact the relevant department at MVB in case you need it.
