Your post shows you are using the TurboTax online web-based editions and not the TurboTax desktop editions installed on a personal computer.

The TurboTax Deluxe online editions has never supported entry of an investment sale or a Form 1099-B. That is only supported using the Premium online edition.

The TurboTax Deluxe desktop edition does support entry of an investment sale and supports Form 1099-B.

No, I am using desktop Turbo Tax Deluxe installed on my laptop. Like I have always done.

This year when I answered the question as to whether I had 1099b (downloaded from my stockbroker) TT flashed that to deal with 1099 I need to upgrade.

Could be a bug or a change for 2025.

Do you know?

@jm831 What you saw was a Recommendation to upgrade to the Premier edition, it was NOT a Requirement.

When I saw the dialog box in question, I thought it was a requirement. Something akin to "1099-B imports are not supported in TT Deluxe." This is a new popup for TurboTax Deluxe Desktop users, not seen in previous years. I had two options -- "Continue" and "Upgrade". I chose continue and did not have to purchase the upgrade. The 1099-B info then imported smoothly into my return.

I'm sure many will upgrade, providing a nice revenue boost to Intuit.

Also, the ability to add flags is grayed out in many pages.

That is exactly what happened to me.

I too did not upgrade and things seem to progress normally. But i was 'concerned'.

I surely took it as a requirement and bit. Paid the $35 and TT entered $59,345 as withheld tax paid. I immediately started off with a refund of $59,345. what a joke.

Don't feel bad. You are probably not the only one.

The messaging in the 2025 turbotax is pretty bad elsewhere too. Further down TT asked me to download from my bank/broker data that I had already downloaded much earlier! That duplication would have been disastrous.

The only reason I have not yet switched to other tax software is because of TT ability to directly download data from my broker. But unless they fix things soon I will have to just drop TT.

Maybe use HR block home using the $5 Excel2TXF to import an excel download from my broker. Still cheaper than TT.

Let's hope TT calculations are still accurate.

I've got TurboTax Deluxe 2025 desktop edition installed to my laptop, as I've been doing for DECADES. Importing from financial institutions, I am greeted with "We see you're trying to import a 1099-B, which requires an upgrade to Premier." This is new, unfortunate, and rather egregious. Can I trust this software to import data correctly and to perform the necessary computations correctly?

You absolutely do not need to upgrade to Premier to import the 1099-B, just hit "Continue" rather than "Upgrade". As for trust, I would generally say Yes, provided that you update the software weekly as updates are released each Thursday, and file as close to April 15 as you are comfortable doing. This is because Congress is always overhauling the tax code, and this year's changes with the One Big (Ugly or Beautiful, depending on your take) Bill, are particularly complex.

TT is the largest vendor of personal tax software, and presumably can dedicate the most resources to digesting what Congress throws at them every year. This year a little patience is required, and I personally am waiting until early April to file.

Yes, I noticed that too. Apparently it is required for TT Online, but not TT Desktop. I clicked on Continue rather than Upgrade and it downloaded the 1099-B flawlessly.

Using the word Require causes more people to click the Upgrade button and thus drives increased revenue for Intuit. It's very shareholder friendly wording. 😉

I have the Import window open in front of me, it says:

We see you're trying to import a 1099-B, which requires an upgrade to Premier.

I'm not doing it. It appears from what others have said the "upgrade" is not a requirement.

No, it definitely says it requires an upgrade to Premier. There is no recommendation.
