topic 2025 credit for 2024 taxes paid in 2025 in Get your taxes done using TurboTax

I have used Turbotax for a number of years. This year it is asking a number of questions about taxes paid for previous years. Here is one of the questions

How much of your 2024 state taxes did you pay in 2025?

I had taxes due last year. If I answer this question and put in the amount I paid on my 2024 taxes when I filed in April, it generates a credit. I am not sure that I am interpreting this question correctly as those were just 2024 taxes due, I should not get a credit. I don't believe this was a question last year.

I have a similar question on estimated tax payments. It seems to be doing the same thing on tax payments. It knows the dates of my tax payments for 2024 and 2025 so it has that collected. But it still comes back and asks if I made an estimated tax payment for 2024 in 2025. Technically yes I did on 1/15/25 but it was for 2024. Again the question is confusing but I made a payment for 2024 in 2025. Again, it seems to give me a credit for 2025 taxes for this 2024 payment. I don't think these questions existed last year. Am I missing something? Thank you

State taxes paid in 2025 for taxes owed on the 2024 state tax return are entered on Schedule A as an itemized deduction for the federal return.

If you only paid 2024 estimated taxes, including the 01/15/2025 payment, those should not be entered on your 2025 tax return. Review the estimated tax section to see what is entered, if anything, and if the 01/15/2025 payment is listed, remove the payment.

To enter, edit or delete estimated taxes paid (Federal, State, Local) -

Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
Click on Deductions and Credits
Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
Scroll down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid
On Estimates, click on the start or update button

Ahh, interesting, so I can deduct my 2024 tax payment made in 2025 on Schedule A. That is great! Thank you

Can you clarify the estimated taxes on schedule A? So I can claim my estimated taxes paid for 2025, paid 4/25, 6/25,9/25 and 1/26 on schedule A but not the 2024 payment made 1/25. It does ask for what that payment was under estimated payments

How much of your 2024 estimated state taxes did you pay in 2025?

But it does not seem to add that to the schedule A as I thought

Thank you

If you filed with TurboTax last year, click the link for How do I view my prior year returns?

You can also get your tax return records using your IRS account. Under Records and Status, you can click the link View Tax Records, then View transcripts on the next page. The next page that shows up will have several options, but you likely want to view the Return Transcript.

If you need additional help, please give as much detailed information (no personal information though) about what you are looking for as that will help us to better help you.
