As part of entering the Railroad Retirement Board form RRB-1099 and box 11 Medicare Premium, TurboTax carry's the premium amount through to schedule A line 1 Medical and dental expenses. Sort of. TurboTax has altered the Medicare premium amount to a smaller amount on schedule A. I cannot figure out why.

I am also running H&R Block tax software and it does not change the Medicare premium amount. Schedule A matches what I entered when entering the RRB-1099 data.

I have not entered any other Medical and dental expenses. Only the Medicare premium should be appearing on schedule A line 1 at this point.

Anyone else find this same issue?

I checked our 2024 TurboTax and this is not an issue. The Medicare premium amount from the RRB-1099 is correct on schedule A.

Line 1 federal schedule A is not correct. I'll provide the actual numbers here:

Our two RRB-1099's total Medicare premium from box 11: $5,233.60 + $5,233.60 =$10,467.20.

The $8,562 below is not correct. Should be $10,467. I am not aware of any reason for a reduction.

And the $8,562 is on line 1 of schedule A as shown below.

I tried compensating for the difference by entering $10,467 - $8,562 =$1,905.00 into the deductions section for "Additional medical insurance premiums", but this resulted in another wrong number: $9,184.

I know it is not really an issue in our case since we don't have enough deduction to go over the 7.5% of AGI ( but we still have more medical deductions to add). It may be an issue for the Kansas state return since our itemized deductions are much higher than the Kansas standard deduction.

I created a mock return to try to replicate the error that you are seeing, but could not do so.

If you go to Forms mode by clicking on Forms in the blue banner on the right, it will take you to your tax forms. On the left side menu, look for a from called Social Sec. Line H should have the entries of $5,234 for each of you.

Also, go to Medical Expenses under Deductions and Credits. Check to se if there is an entry for medical reimbursements as an entry there will cause a reduction of Medical Expenses.

Please let us know you findings in this forum.

I found what is happening on the Medical Expenses Worksheet. An HSA distribution is subtracted from the medical and dental expenses, which is not correct because the HSA money was not used to pay the Medicare premiums and there are no other medical or dental expenses on the worksheet.

The HSA distribution is $1,906. Should I be entering it in the Amount field shown below?

No, you shouldn't add in the offset there. Because HSA distributions can be used as tax free payments for medical expenses, they must be subtracted from medical expenses that you are deducting on your tax return. TurboTax only knows that you paid Medicare premiums as medical expenses, and since those were the only medical expenses that you reported, the program has to assume that you used the HSA funds to offset the Medicare Premiums. What you can do is add in all your medical expenses that you had for 2025 in addition to the Medicare Premiums to Medical Expenses in the Deductions and Credits section of TurboTax. You may have some medicals expenses that you had that you didn't use the HSA to pay for that may increase your medical expense deduction.
