Texas doesn't impose a state income tax, so employers aren't required to report state wages or state withholding. You can leave those boxes empty when entering your W-2, and this won't affect your federal return.

Hi i am from Texas and on one of my w2 for the state income part 15-17. Box 15 just says Texas and says no employee ID #. But then box 16 has the same number from box 1 on my w2 of my wages. So I am confused should I leave 15-17 blank ? Because only thing it shows is box 16 with my wages earned and no ID # for box 15 just had TX. And it errored my response when I copied wages into box 16 and said I need a state ID *. But there isn’t one right since I am in Texas ?

Nine states — Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming — have no state income taxes.

As your state Texas has no state income tax, it is not in the drop down menu of Box 15 of form W-2. Just leave boxes 15,16 and 17 blank even if TX is listed in box 15 and box 16 is filled with an amount on your form W-2.

I know this post is almost 1 year old. I'm in exactly same situation right now. Box 15 (state) has TX in it but no employer ID. Box 16 (state wages, tips etc) has the same numbers as box 1 (wages, tips, other comp). Box 17 (state income tax) is empty because there is none in TX.

The company who produce this W2 is dumb to fill them out when there's no state income tax in TX. Those 3 boxes should be empty on the W2. Turbotax keeps flagging that W2. It needs an employer ID or else it is invalid and I won't be able to file electronically. It stops flagging when I remove them entirely (ie. delete entries in box 15, 16, 17) and proceed. I have not filed it yet. I hope there won't be any problems when I submit it electronically.

Thanks. I understand that but I'm a new TX resident so I've never seen a W2 from TX employer. I was saying it confused me because when I manually filled out my W2 entries in Turbotax desktop software, I typed them in exactly as I saw them on paper W2. Turbotax flagged it (need employer's ID but there's none).

After further searching and reading, I removed all entries from 15 thru 17 to stop the error flagging. The employer should've just left box 15 thru 17 empty and stop confusing their employees especially those who just moved to a state where there is no state income tax. I'm used to seeing state income tax in CA. This is my first time preparing income tax as TX resident.
