topic Question about the name of a Trust on Form 1041 in Get your taxes done using TurboTax

I am the trustee of my late father’s Trust. He died in September 2024. When my father died his Trust lawyer requested a Federal Tax ID number. Pretending my father’s name was John Doe, the name of the on the request for Tax ID was “THE JOHN DOE TR dated 01-10-2010”. When I filled out the 1041 for the 2024 Tax Year, which was the Initial tax return, I used “The John Doe Trust” as the name without the date. Is this going to cause a problem since I left out “dated 01-01-2010”? Since I realized that the date was left off on the 1041 for Tax Year 1024, on the 1041 form for the Tax Year 2025 should I include “dated 01-10-2010”? Will this cause further confusion for the IRS or does this not matter? Thanks!

Leave the name the same as 2024. The IRS only matches the first four characters of the name for electronic and validation purposes. Additionally, if the IRS accepted the 2024 return, then you'll be ok to keep using that name for 2025 and going forward.

I filed it on paper. If there was a problem would the IRS have mailed me a letter to tell me? Thanks!

Yes, if there was a problem the IRS would have notified you by mail. As long as you had the tax ID # correct there won't be any problem. I would add the date information to future filings - there could be another "John Doe Trust" out there, but I doubt there's one with the same date.

My father was only one in the United States who had his name! It was quite unique. Yes, the Tax ID was correct.

Thanks!
