My child qualifies for the Credit for Other Dependents. She meets all the qualifications. I have claimed this in past years, but no combination of the answers allows me to claim that credit this year. The law hasn't changed. Seems to me there a problem with the software.

Make sure you have entered your child as a dependent in My Info, and that you have entered the child's Social Security number. Careful— do not say that your child’s SSN is not valid for employment. If your child was born in 2025 make sure you said he lived with you the whole year. There is an oddly worded question that asks if the child paid over half their own support. Say NO to that question.

If your dependent was a full-time college student, make sure you were careful on the MY INFO screen for “Uncommon situations” and that you indicated there that they were a student.

If she is age 19 or older and is not a full time student under the age of 24 and her total income is $5,200 or more, she cannot be claimed as a dependent.

To be a Qualifying Relative -

1. The person cannot be your qualifying child or the qualifying child of any other taxpayer. A child is not the qualifying child of any other taxpayer if the child's parent (or any other person for whom the child is defined as a qualifying child) is not required to file an income tax return or files an income tax return only to get a refund on income tax withheld.
2. The person either (a) must be related to you or (b) must live with you all year as a member of your household.
3. The person's gross income for the year must be less than $5,200 (social security does not count) in 2025
4. You must provide more than half of the person's total support for the year.
5. The person must be a U.S. citizen or a U.S., Canada, or Mexico resident for some part of the year.
6. The person must not file a joint return with their spouse.

I answered all the questions correctly. As I said, my child meets all the criteria. Finally figured out that if I uncheck the box for a full time student, then the credit is given. That's a software bug. The criteria for the Credit for Other Dependent is not based on whether the person is a student or not.

Do you mind me asking how old your child is? I'm having the same issue and can't figure out what the issue is. My son is 17 so he doesn't qualify for a child credit but should qualify for the other dependents credit. I'm not even getting the option to check or uncheck if they're a student.

My child is 20. The student option was on the second page with all the checkboxes. I ended up checking the None of these option. You should still get to that page even if your son is 17. All I can suggest is delete/reenter the dependent information and try answering the questions different ways.
