Yes, your selection of "Other (not classified)" for your Colorado FAMLI insurance listed on your Form W-2 Box 14, as "CO FAMLI" is the correct selection.

My research on this topic has led me to conclude that it should be categorized as "Other deductible state or local tax" particularly if you ITEMIZE deductions. If you are taking the standard deduction, it won't matter.

In this case using the category "Other (not classified)" would be a more appropriate entry. FAMLI is not a tax. It's a premium and it is not tax deductible, even if you itemize your deductions.

FAMLI on a Colorado tax return refers to the Family and Medical Leave Insurance program. This program is a state-run paid leave program that started in 2024.

This program is funded by premiums that are deducted from employee paychecks, which are often shown in Box 14 of a Form W-2. These premiums are generally tax-exempt for Colorado state income tax purposes.

This response does not make sense to me and seems contradictory. You state it is deductible at the state tax level so it seems to me you should select "Other deductible state and local tax" Not "Other (not classified)".

The most appropriate category is generally considered to be "Other (not classified)". FAMLI is a post-tax premium, not a tax, and does not need to be classified as a deductible tax for state or federal income taxes. FAMLI premiums are withheld from your pay after taxes have been applied, meaning they do not reduce your federal taxable wages.

Classifying Box 14 items as an "other deductible state tax" (such as state disability, SDI, or mandatory union dues) on a W-2 tells TurboTax that the amount is a deductible expense, potentially lowering your federal or state taxable income. This is not the case.

Classifying Box 14 items as Other (not classified) tells TurboTax that the amount represents miscellaneous, non-standardized deductions—(such as uniform payments) that usually do not impact federal income tax calculations.

Please return to Community if you have any additional information or questions and we would be happy to help.

Linda, it looks like you work for Intuit. How do I submit a complaint to TurboTax for not having a proper option in the dropdown for Colorado PMFL and Colorado FAMLI. It is awful that I pay $70 for the turbotax product, and that users across the state of Colorado have to guess what to put for the Category on these Box 14 entries 2 years in a row. This a huge number of Colorado users. The whole purpose of Turbotax is to automate this type of thing, not make users guess and possibly make a mistake that the IRS audits them for.
