A 1099-NEC is a direct result of receiving income for your services. It does require you to prepare a business (Schedule C) on your tax return.

Instead of entering your 1099-NEC form, which is not a requirement, you can enter the income directly on Schedule C. Keep the form in your tax files.

In TurboTax Online/Mobile:

Sign into your tax return > Select Search (upper right) > type Schedule C > click the 'Jump to... link'

Select 'Other Income' and enter the amount from your 1099-NEC and, if applicable, any other income you may have received.

In TurboTax Desktop:

Sign into your tax return > Select Search (upper right) > type Schedule C > click the Jump to.. link

This will allow you to enter your income and any expenses that directly related to your ability to earn it.

Please update here if you have more questions and we will help.

I am filling out my 1099-NECs. I am self-employed and have many every year. About half of them are showing "Needs Review" but no matter how I update them, it does not go away. There are no red boxes indicating a need for more info.

I do not want to skip entering the NECs. It is useful for me to do this. How do I get it to accept that what I have entered is correct?

Check your Schedule C - the income should all be reported. The message does not prevent e-file and TurboTax is reporting your 1099-NEC totals on Schedule C.

Go ahead and scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on Continue. The Needs Review message will NOT prevent e-file. Before you file the return(s), TurboTax will take you through a Complete Check and will flag any errors that will prevent e-filing then. You can continuing preparing your returns and ignore the needs review messages. If there are any errors on the return, the Complete Check in the final review section will prompt you to make changes before submitting the return(s). @Al130

I appreciate this follow up. I'll just keep going but I hope you can report this to the bug fixing team. It should not say this when everything is fine.

FYI, it seems like it could be triggered by whether or not there is info in boxes 5-7.

Thanks.

It is reported! It is probably because of the state boxes, but if there is nothing in those boxes, you can leave them blank. If there is info in those boxes, there is a box you can check on the entry screen to enter those amounts.
