Hi Team,

I resided in the US on a work visa from Jan-July 2025 before leaving to return to Canada at the expiration of my temporary visa term. I was employed while in the US and earned income from my job, however, have not worked with no further income for the remainder of the 2025 tax year while in Canada. My spouse commenced work in Canada in August 2025 and earned income from this throughout the remainder of the year. We had no other forms of income.

Will TurboTax full service cater for such a scenario and be able to file our return for both the US and Canada for the tax year 2025?

Many thanks.

No. Because you were in the US from January to July, you likely pass the Substantial Presence Test for 2025. Since you left before the end of the year and have no intention of returning on that visa, you are considered a Dual-Status Alien.

TurboTax (including Full Service) does not support Form 1040-NR, which is the required "informational statement" for a dual-status return.

T‌urboTax recommends using Sprintax for users who aren't residents or have dual status. Sprintax is designed for people who aren't residents and have dual status. Click here to contact Sprint Tax.
